Exploring Amsterdam: A 5-Day Adventure

Amsterdam is a city that blends history, modern art, and a vibrant food scene seamlessly. We spent four nights and five days in this beautiful city, making the most of our time by visiting museums, enjoying the local culture, and exploring nearby attractions. Here’s a recap of our incredible experience.

Day 1: Arrival & Rotterdam Day Trip

We arrived in Amsterdam from Vienna in the morning and stayed at Mercure Amsterdam North Station, just a short metro ride from the city center. Since we reached before our check-in time, we decided to take a day trip to Rotterdam.

Using the NS app (www.ns.nl), we booked return tickets and reached Rotterdam in just 45-50 minutes. The city’s architecture was stunning! We explored the famous Cube Houses and indulged in delicious treats at Markthal Market, especially stroopwafels. By evening, we returned to Amsterdam, eager for the adventures ahead.

Day 2: A Day of History, Museums & Canal Cruise

The weather was chilly and overcast, but we were well-prepared with umbrellas. A key tip: pre-book museum tickets online, as many attractions require pre-registration.

We bought the 24-hour I am Amsterdam City Card, which gave us access to several museums. Our first stop was the Moco Museum, showcasing modern and contemporary art, including works by Banksy and other unique artists. We then spent a few hours at the Rijksmuseum, home to masterpieces like Rembrandt’s The Night Watch.

After lunch, we visited the NEMO Science Museum, which Aanya absolutely loved! The hands-on exhibits and live shows kept her fully engaged. The strong winds outside made walking an adventure of its own. To finish the day, we enjoyed the This is Holland 5D experience, immersing ourselves in the Netherlands’ history and landscapes.

By evening, the weather improved, so we took a classic canal cruise to end the day. Floating along the canals, we admired the 17th-century houses, picturesque bridges, and historic landmarks from a new perspective. The audio guide offered fascinating insights into the city’s rich history, making it a perfect, relaxing way to take in Amsterdam’s beauty.

Day 3: Morning Run, Biking & Exploring the City

The sun was shining, making it the perfect day to explore Amsterdam. I started the morning with a brisk 10km run from our hotel in Noord to Amsterdam City Central and back, passing through beautiful parks, charming residential streets, and scenic canals along the way. It was a fantastic way to experience the quieter side of the city before it got busy. Running in Amsterdam felt refreshing, with well-maintained paths and a cool morning breeze adding to the experience.

After freshening up and grabbing breakfast, we took a short metro ride to Amsterdam Central and embarked on a 2-hour guided bicycle tour with Yellow Bikes, pre-booked via GetYourGuide. This was one of the highlights of our trip!

Our guide took us through the Jordaan Quarter, Anne Frank House, Rijksmuseum, Vondelpark, and the Skinny Bridge, sharing fascinating stories along the way. Biking in Amsterdam is a must-do experience, despite a few struggles with inclines! After the tour, we strolled through the charming streets, indulging in more stroopwafels. Suneetha and Aanya decided to head back to the hotel after lunch.

Next, I visited the Heineken Experience, a must-do for beer lovers. The tour took me through the history of Heineken, the brewing process, and interactive exhibits that made the experience fun and engaging. The highlight was the tasting session, where I got to enjoy freshly brewed Heineken straight from the source. The immersive 4D ride, simulating the journey of a beer bottle, added a unique touch to the tour!

In the evening, I explored the Red Light District to experience Amsterdam’s famous nightlife. And no, I didn’t try the cannabis brownies—though the thought did cross my mind! 😄

Day 4: Keukenhof, Zaanse Schans & A Quick Trip to Zaandam

This was the day we had been most excited about—visiting Keukenhof Tulip Gardens, also known as the Garden of Europe. Open only for a few months each year, we were lucky to visit during peak bloom.

We booked a full-day tour via GetYourGuide, which included a countryside visit to Zaanse Schans. Our day was filled with breathtaking floral displays, charming windmills, and unique Dutch traditions. The highlights included:

  • Wandering through the Keukenhof Gardens, soaking in the colorful tulips.
  • Exploring the windmill village at Zaanse Schans.
  • Enjoying a cheese tasting and watching a clog-making demonstration. The local artisan even spoke a few words in Hindi and several different languages, impressing the audience!

We took tons of pictures and videos, making this an unforgettable experience.

Later in the afternoon, we took a short train ride to Zaandam to see the iconic Inntel Hotel, famous for its stacked colorful houses design. It was like stepping into a fairytale! The unique architecture made for some fantastic photo opportunities, and we took our time admiring the charming surroundings before heading back to Amsterdam.

Day 5: Farewell to Amsterdam

Our European adventure wrapped up as we checked out after breakfast and headed to the airport. I hadn’t mentioned this earlier, but this was also Suneetha and Aanya’s first time flying with Emirates, and Aanya had an amazing experience, receiving special goodies from the crew.

One of the highlights for me was flying on the Airbus A380, the world’s largest passenger plane. Both our outbound flight (Dubai to Munich) and return flight (Amsterdam to Dubai) were operated by the A380, and I was excited to see what made this aircraft so special.

From the moment we boarded, the sheer size and spaciousness of the A380 stood out. The double-decker layout, mood lighting, and quieter cabin made for an incredibly comfortable flight. Takeoff was surprisingly smooth for such a massive plane, and the in-flight entertainment was top-notch. I especially enjoyed the tail camera feature, which provided a fascinating view from above. Overall, the flight experience was exceptional, and I can confidently say the A380 has now become one of my favorite planes to fly on!

Final Thoughts

Amsterdam stole our hearts with its charm, culture, and vibrancy. Whether it was biking through its historic streets, indulging in Dutch delicacies, or immersing ourselves in art and history, this trip was nothing short of magical.

If you’re planning a visit, pre-book tickets for major attractions, rent a bike, and most importantly—enjoy every moment of this incredible city!
