Exploring the Best of Innsbruck– Day 2

Innsbruck, Austria, is a gem in the heart of the Alps, offering a perfect blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and historical grandeur. Recently, we enjoyed exploring three of its most captivating attractions: the majestic Nordkette Mountain, the charming Alpine Zoo, and the enchanting Ambras Castle. Here’s a glimpse into our unforgettable journey.

Our second day began early with a trip to the Nordkette Mountain, a highlight for anyone visiting Innsbruck. Known as the “Top of Innsbruck,” Nordkette is part of the Karwendel Nature Park and provides stunning panoramic views of the city and the surrounding Alps.

The journey to Nordkette starts with a ride on the Hungerburg funicular from the Congress station. The modern funicular is an experience in itself, offering scenic views as it climbs up the mountainside. From Hungerburg, you switch to the cable cars that take you further up to Seegrube and then to Hafelekar, the highest point accessible to visitors.

Unfortunately, Hafelekar was closed for maintenance during our visit. We could only go up to Seegrube where the views were nothing short of spectacular. The crisp mountain air and the sight of snow-capped peaks stretching into the horizon create a serene and awe-inspiring atmosphere. Whether you’re an avid hiker or just looking to enjoy the view, Nordkette has something for everyone.

After the exhilaration of Nordkette, our next stop was the Alpine Zoo, one of the highest zoos in Europe, situated at 750 meters above sea level. The zoo specializes in Alpine animals and provides a unique opportunity to see these creatures in environments that closely mimic their natural habitats.

The zoo is home to over 2,000 animals from around 150 different species. Each exhibit is thoughtfully designed to educate visitors about the animals and their ecosystems.

The Alpine Zoo is perfect for families. Kids will love the interactive exhibits and the chance to see animals up close. There are also plenty of picnic spots and a playground, making it easy to spend a full day here. Do wear comfortable walking shoes, as the zoo is set on a hillside and involves a fair amount of walking.

Our final destination for the day was Ambras Castle, a Renaissance masterpiece that offers a fascinating glimpse into Tyrolean history. Located just a short distance from the city center, the castle is a must-visit for history buffs and art lovers alike.

Ambras Castle is divided into several sections, each with its own unique charm. The Lower Castle houses the stunning Spanish Hall, adorned with portraits of Tyrolean nobles. This grand hall often hosts concerts and events, adding to its vibrant history.

The Upper Castle is home to the Armory, where you can see an impressive collection of armor and weapons. As I wandered through the rooms, I was captivated by the detailed craftsmanship and the stories behind each piece.

The castle also features an extensive art collection, including portraits, sculptures, and tapestries. The Gallery of Wonders was a highlight, showcasing curiosities and treasures collected by Archduke Ferdinand II. Allow at least two hours to fully explore the castle and its grounds.

Innsbruck was the highlight of our trip. Irrespective of your travel interests, It offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, wildlife, and historical grandeur, making it an ideal destination for travel. It promises a rich and rewarding experience! We packed our bags to head to our next destination, Salzburg the following morning!
